Earlier this week, I submitted the following application to join the We Do Not Care Club:
I stumbled upon the WDNC scrolling TikTok, which I can’t even believe I’m typing with seriousness and sincerity; but in the midst of doing my final manuscript edits, I have been spending more time on social media (even hired a coach and an intern to help me!) in order to build my author platform as I begin to promote my book.
Onto my #FYP (that’s “for you page”—or the main feed—for those of you who are not in the TikTok loop and whose daily screen time is probably half of what mine now is, sigh) popped @justbeingmelani and one of her daily announcements for the WDNC. In a hilarious deadpan and donning reading glasses on her face, head, and tucked into her t-shirt, Melani read a list of things we, the collective group of women in perimenopause and menopause, no longer care about. I was instantly drawn in. I felt seen, heard, accepted. I knew I had to join this club immediately.
The WDNC is my new favorite thing. It’s trending on both Instagram and TikTok. Women from every corner of the country and other parts of the world, women of varying ages, races, and sizes, with a diverse array of accents and outfits and accessories (though reading glasses are practically universal), are all putting themselves out there as club members and listing their “we do not cares.” Menopause icon Dr. Mary Claire Haver even applied!
This movement is brilliant. It’s unifying. It’s gratifying. It’s cathartic. It’s connection—something that we all need now more than ever.
I’ve already posted a follow-up video to my application, and I’m going to be instituting We Do Not Care Wednesdays on Instagram and TikTok as long as this movement continues. And I hope it has legs for a long time to come. Even if those legs have spider and/or varicose veins. We do not care.
Have you joined the movement yet? What do you not care about? Let me know!
This is so funny! I love that humor is being used to connect so many women!
